Yeast infection is a common medical condition. According to statistics, 75% of women get one at least once in their lifetime. It is very important to avoid self-diagnosing and self-medicating. In the event of any suspicious symptoms, you should consult your doctor.

Yeast infections can be uncomfortable and annoying. They are also ubiquitous, especially among women. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are six tips to prevent a yeast infection.

Wear cotton underwear.

Avoid wearing tight-fitting underwear that puts pressure on the area. These can trap moisture in your nether regions and cause a yeast infection. Try switching to cotton or a breathable material for undergarments. Keep in mind that cotton can cause irritation, so be sure to wash it first thing when you get up.

Sterilize pads and tampons with boiling water and soap, then dry them off in a sanitary way before using them. Avoid using intimate deodorants, perfumed soaps, and scented pads or tampons.

When you’re cleaning your vagina, use a feminine wash. These can help break down the bacteria and kill off yeast in the area. Also, make sure to dry it thoroughly after use. Most importantly, DO NOT  douche unless it is prescribed by a doctor.

Get plenty of rest. Women who don’t sleep enough can be more prone to yeast infections because they may not have enough time to clean themselves properly or wear sanitary underwear. Make sure you get at least seven hours of sleep each night if you want to keep an imbalance in the hormones that help keep your vagina healthy.

Eat foods rich in zinc and other minerals. Zinc is essential to good health, especially for women. Foods rich in zinc include poultry, seafood, whole grains, and legumes.

Balanced nutrition is also crucial for the prevention of yeast infection. Adding foods rich in fiber and protein into your diet, as well as probiotics (fermented milk products), can be beneficial.

If you’re worried about yeast infections, use a vaginal suppository called Monistat-D or a similar product that contains the medication nystatin twice daily. This will help kill off yeast infections before they can get any worse. Keep in mind that you may need to continue with the medication for a few months.

In rare cases, vaginal yeast infections can be dangerous, so make sure you see a doctor if you develop redness and irritation around your vagina or feel like you have lost your ability to have sex. This could mean that you’re dealing with an infection called vaginitis.

If this is the case, it’s best to see your doctor as soon as possible so they can give you the right treatment.
